What is OffRecord AI Journal?
OffRecord AI Journal is a free AI voice journaling app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. You speak your thoughts, capture moods from your wrist, and let Friday learn your patterns — all without developer servers, accounts, ads, or tracking.
Is OffRecord AI Journal really free?
Yes, completely. OffRecord AI Journal has no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no ads, and no premium tier. Every feature — voice journaling, AI mood detection, Friday, personality cards, encrypted backups, and export — is included for free. Compare that to Day One ($34.99/yr), Journey ($29.99/yr), Reflectly ($59.99/yr), or Daylio ($23.99/yr).
How does voice journaling work in OffRecord AI Journal?
Tap the record button and start speaking. OffRecord AI Journal uses Apple's Speech framework to transcribe your voice into text in real time, entirely on your device. When you finish, the app saves both the audio and the transcription as a journal entry. You can also edit the text afterward or add photos.
Is my data private in OffRecord AI Journal?
Yes. OffRecord AI Journal processes everything on your device. There are no servers receiving your data. Your voice recordings, transcriptions, photos, and Friday model never leave your phone. Apple has verified this with a "Data Not Collected" privacy nutrition label on the App Store. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Does OffRecord AI Journal work offline?
Yes. Recording, transcription, mood detection, and all AI features work fully offline. The app uses on-device models that run on Apple's Neural Engine, so no internet connection is needed. Speech transcription accuracy may be slightly better online, but offline accuracy is still very good.
What is Friday in OffRecord AI Journal?
Friday is a private AI model that learns from your journal entries over time. It picks up on your personality traits, emotional patterns, communication style, values, and personal knowledge. After enough entries, it generates personality cards and can predict your moods. Friday stays 100% on your device and grows more accurate the more you journal.
How does mood detection work?
OffRecord AI Journal uses Apple's NaturalLanguage framework to analyze the sentiment and emotional content of your journal entries on-device. It classifies entries into 9 mood categories and tracks patterns over time. The mood detection runs automatically after each entry and requires no manual input, though you can adjust the detected mood if you disagree.
Can I export my journal data?
Yes. OffRecord AI Journal supports exporting your journal in multiple formats, including PDF, JSON, Markdown, CSV, and plain text. Weekly Reflection reports can also be exported. Source quotes stay out unless you choose to include them.
Do I need to create an account to use OffRecord AI Journal?
No. OffRecord AI Journal requires no account, no sign-up, and no email address. You download it and start journaling immediately. If you want to sync across devices, you can optionally enable iCloud sync, which uses your existing Apple ID — but this is entirely optional.
What is Weekly Reflection?
Weekly Reflection is a private look back at your week. When you have written enough, OffRecord AI Journal can show a calm report with a short summary, themes, small wins, friction points, questions, saved takeaways, and history.
Can I choose which entries are included?
Yes. You can open the source list for a weekly reflection, choose which entries stay included, remove entries from that reflection, and add them back later. This changes the reflection only; it does not change the original journal entries.
Are weekly reminders private?
Yes. Weekly reminders use simple, static wording. They do not include journal text, names, quotes, themes, or summaries.
Does OffRecord work on Apple Watch?
Yes. The Apple Watch companion is built for quick capture: save a mood, dictate a short thought, record audio, or check recent capture status from your wrist. Your full journal stays on iPhone and iPad.
What happens if my watch is away from my phone?
Apple Watch captures are saved on the watch first. If your iPhone is not nearby, your watch keeps the capture until it can send. When your paired iPhone is nearby again, OffRecord AI Journal adds it to your journal.
Does the Apple Watch face show my journal text?
No. The watch face and Smart Stack entry are privacy-safe. They show quick access and simple status only, not journal text, transcripts, moods, or voice-note content.
What devices are supported?
OffRecord AI Journal runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.0 or later, plus an Apple Watch companion for watchOS 26 or later. There is no Android, web, or Mac version at this time.
How is OffRecord AI Journal different from Day One?
The main differences are price, privacy, and AI. OffRecord AI Journal is completely free while Day One costs $34.99/year for premium features. OffRecord AI Journal processes all data on-device with no cloud servers, while Day One syncs data through their servers. OffRecord AI Journal includes AI features like a Friday and mood prediction that Day One does not offer. Day One does support more platforms (Mac, Android, web) and has a longer track record.
Is it safe to journal private thoughts in OffRecord AI Journal?
Yes. OffRecord AI Journal was designed specifically for private journaling. Your data never leaves your device, encrypted backups use AES-256 encryption, and you can lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID. Since there are no servers, there is no risk of a data breach exposing your journal. Apple's privacy label confirms "Data Not Collected."
What happens if I lose my phone?
If you have iCloud sync enabled, your entries will be available on any other Apple device signed into the same Apple ID. If you have exported encrypted backups, you can restore from those. Without either, your journal data exists only on the device. We recommend enabling iCloud sync or regularly exporting encrypted backups as a safety measure.
How does on-device AI work without the cloud?
OffRecord AI Journal uses Apple's built-in machine learning frameworks — NaturalLanguage for sentiment analysis and named entity recognition, Speech for transcription, and Core ML for running models on Apple's Neural Engine chip. These frameworks are optimized to run efficiently on-device without needing an internet connection or cloud processing.
Can I use OffRecord AI Journal without speaking (text only)?
Yes. While voice journaling is the primary feature, you can also type entries directly. You can write text-only entries, or record voice and then edit the transcription. OffRecord AI Journal's AI features work on the text regardless of whether it was typed or spoken.
Can I save more than one voice note in a day?
Yes. OffRecord AI Journal keeps multiple voice notes for the same day, including notes captured from Apple Watch, so each recording is preserved.
How many mood categories does OffRecord AI Journal track?
OffRecord AI Journal tracks 9 mood categories. The AI automatically detects your mood from each journal entry, and you can view mood trends over time through weekly insights. You can also manually adjust the detected mood if you feel it does not match your actual state.
What are personality cards?
Personality cards are insights generated by your Friday after it has analyzed enough journal entries. They describe aspects of your personality, values, communication style, and emotional patterns that the AI has identified. Cards become more detailed and accurate as you journal more frequently.
Does OffRecord AI Journal support iCloud sync?
Yes. You can enable iCloud sync in Settings to sync your journal entries across your iPhone and iPad via Apple's CloudKit. Your data is encrypted with your Apple ID. iCloud sync is optional and disabled by default.
